Gynecomastia

Today, although aesthetic appearance and interventions are not only important for women but also for men. Aesthetic surgery, which is applied especially by men due to enlargement of breast tissues, has become increasingly popular in recent years.

What is gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia can be briefly defined as enlargement of breast tissues in men. In other words, it appears in the body as a hard mass starting from under the nipple and spreading towards the chest area.

This condition, which is seen more in young men, is not an adipose tissue, but an enlargement of the glandular tissue. This condition can be painful depending on the case. In addition, in some cases, only one breast is affected by this, while in others both of them.

The Causes of Gynecomastia:

  • Hormone imbalance: Imbalances between the sex hormones testosterone and estrogen are among the most common causes. Estrogen, in particular, causes enlargement and growth of breast tissue.
  • Excess weight: Obesity is one of the most common causes of gynecomastia. The weight gained can increase the estrogen hormone levels, which can cause the breast tissue to grow in the person.
  • Estrogen passed from mother to baby: Gynecomastia in newborn boys can also occur due to estrogen passing from the mother to the baby through the placenta. However, this is temporary. This will go away about a few weeks after birth.
  • Puberty: During puberty, hormone levels change in both men and women. For example, a decrease in testosterone levels in men can cause estrogen breast tissue to grow. Therefore, breast enlargement may occur due to hormonal changes, especially in men who are in puberty.
  • Aging: As men age, less testosterone and more estrogen are produced. Due to this situation, it is natural to see excessive breast tissue growth in increasing ages.
  • Side effects of some drugs, excessive alcohol consumption or kidney failure can also cause gynecomastia.

Gynecomastia Surgery

If gynecomastia is not caused by some temporary reasons or occurs as a pervasive discomfort, going under operation can be an option. The operation becomes necessary when breasts have grown a lot and/or when sagginess have started to occur. Firstly, the skin on the breast is removed. In the meantime, the nipples are reduced to appropriate sizes and placed in the form of skin patches where necessary. A very small scar remains after the operation. However, this has a fairly small effect for people who are uncomfortable with the saggy and large breast appearance.

In short gynecomastia surgery, provides a more fit and more aesthetic appearance. The operation, which can be done to anyone over the age of 17, takes an average of 1 hour.
